Northwest Handspun Yarns is a Northwest Resource for the discerning Fiberartist.

NW Handspun YarnsOwner Nancy Bjerke's Great Grandfather owned three ranches in Wyoming during the 1920's. The picture shows he and his family bringing eight bands of sheep down from the Big Horn Mountains to the lowlands after the first autumn snow in 1922. Nancy's Grandfather, who was 10 years old at the time, said that there was always one sheep who hung around the camp where the men would feed her pancakes.
Hello Fiber Friends!

Summer is here (despite the rain), and what a simple and wonderful line up we have for you! Just the basics here, with a couple surprises, so read on to see what you might be interested in! Even with all that gardening, picnicking, reunions, there still might be some yarning in you this summer!

STITCH and PITCH tickets are on sale NOW! August 7th is the date to go to Qwest Field to watch the Mariners. We leave at 3:00 on the BIG bus and arrive back home about 1:00. We will be joining our friends at Wildfibers, Ana Cross Stitch and Apple Yarns on the bus. Hey, it’s the BIG bus! Our shop has 14 tickets, and we’ve sold a few already, so give us a call! $50.00 includes the bus fare, box lunch, game ticket, and loads of fun! Be sure to bring your knitting, and your friends!

Charity Knitting/Donation Station: Hats for Head Start Kids, and Felted Bags for Dorothy Place. We begin this summer by collecting donated washable yarns for the kid’s caps, and yarns that shrink for the felted bags. We have the patterns for the caps to give out, or use your own left over yarns and patterns. The children are 3 and 4 years old. Last time we knit caps for kids, we knit 170 in about 6 weeks. You gals and guys are good! This time we have about a 4 month head start, and we have 330 caps to knit. We will give them to the local Head Start program in early December. For the Felted Bags, we are working with the Opportunity Council’s Dorothy Place – they auction off the bags every year at their November fundraiser. They need just a few.

This summer we raised $500.00 at our fundraiser for Breast Cancer: Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Special thanks to those of you who purchased the special pink sock kit from Skacel for the Friday night fundraising event. There are still some sock kits left over. If you would like to purchase one, ALL the profits from this pink sock kit will still go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure! So please, come on in and get a kit! Thank YOU!

Weave a COASTER this summer at the shop! If you have never woven before, this is an opportunity to take 20 – 30 minutes to weave a simple project. We will have a loom set up all summer ready to weave. Shuttle and yarn ready to go. When you are finished, we’ll cut it off and show you how to finish the ends, and TA – DA ! You have a coaster! Bring in your visiting relatives for a Bellingham woven souvenir! The cost is $10.00 for the first coaster, and $5.00 for each subsequent coaster. Please give a call, so we know when you are coming!

A look ahead – our Annual Anniversary Celebration and Sale. We will start to weave fabric for another waulking celebration in August. If you would like to weave some of that fabric, let me know, and of course, you will receive part of that fabric after it is waulked. Waulking day this year is Saturday, September 27. The Sale is September 26, 27, and 28. Cat Bordhi will be here September 20 and 21. Bev Gelaskes of Fibertrends will be here October 10 and 11 for a tremendous trunk show. And Judith McKenzie will be here in November for a spinning and weaving workshop.

Happy summer, and I hope to see you in the shop, or maybe, just maybe, knitting on your boat!

Kind regards,

Nancy, Miss Knitty and all the rest!
